Top Picks for Things to Do In the Jersey Shore
It seems in recent years that the Jersey Shore has become synonymous with the antics of the cast of MTV’s namesake show. However, there a tons of things to do and see—from beautiful beaches and great shopping to world-class dining “down by the shore.” Melody Williamson, Concierge at The Plaza Hotel, and a resident of the area, shares her top suggestions of things to do in the Jersey Shore. “Two years ago, I purchased a house there,” Williamson shares. “I discovered that the Jersey Shore really is a whole different world and only about an hour away by car. Anyone looking to escape the cement for a daytrip or weekend getaway should come down for a visit.” While there, Williamson suggests a trip to the beach. “The Atlantic Ocean beckons you to the boardwalks in many of the beach towns in Monmouth County. This time of year, the water is still very warm.” She also notes that surfers find great waves year-round and says Bradley Beach is usually her choice for a long stroll. For those looking for a great locale to go fishing, opt for fishing off one of the jetties on Bradley Beach or a fishing trip with one of the many charter companies in the area. You can also take in the sights by renting a bicycle—a great way to explore several beaches in the same day. History buffs might enjoy a trip to Ocean Grove, a historical landmark that is teeming with shops and cafés. The community is also home to the Great Auditorium—a large auditorium that dates back to the 19th century and what Williamson calls a “must-see” attraction. Monmouth County plays host to many fall festivals, with the upcoming Ocean Grove’s Fall Harvest Festival And Craft Show and Belmar Fall Festival as standouts. These events “offer fantastic artist crafts and great antique finds,” Williamson says. Also, in Spring Lake, foodies can take a Food Tasting Tour in some of the area’s historical kitchens. For a more conventional dining experience, head to Klein’s Fish Market, Waterside Cafe, Grill Room & Sushi Bar. “They are renowned for their excellent seafood and sushi in a beautiful setting.” Or, if you prefer Italian, visit La Dolce Vita, which Williamson describes as amazing and a great place to watch the moon rise over the ocean during dinner.
