Top Attractions for Car Aficionados
With the fast pace of city life, some might say every New Yorker is an adrenaline junkie to a certain extent. However, Luis Vasquez, Personal Assistant/Concierge at Langham Place, Fifth Avenue (400 Fifth Avenue, 212.695.4005)—who’s lived in “The City That Never Sleeps” for the past seven years (three of which he’s worked as a concierge)—takes it to a whole other level. Vasquez has a love for cars and says, “New York is such a great city; and if you are a car aficionado, it does not disappoint either. With the car season in full bloom, there are so many great options for car-viewing and great adventures.” Here, he offers his top three.
“Not too far from the hustle and bustle of the city—if you just want to get your adrenaline and corner-carving fix—you have the purest expression of four-wheel motorsports, go-karts, in Jersey City, NJ,” he says. “Pole Position Raceway is a great option if you are traveling with the entire family, or just by yourself, as they have a great program for kids and aficionados of all levels.” The 80,000-square-foot, two-track facility is home to 45mph go-karts.
“There are also great car gatherings within an hour and a half of New York City, which usually take place early morning on weekends, known as Cars and Coffee,” Vasquez says, adding that the group hosts events that feature some of the most exclusive cars in the world. “Even though there are many events like this, Caffeine & Carburetors is probably the one that takes the cake.” Typically held in New Canaan, Connecticut, this gathering of automotive enthusiasts meets at Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee about six times per year, with foreign sports cars often taking center stage. “If you are lucky enough to be in New York for the time, make sure to make a space for this in your itinerary—and also make sure to charge your camera batteries,” he advises. For those jet-setting gear heads, there’s always the option of joining a car club. “If you are a person that travels frequently between New York and London, there is nothing better than Classic Car Club Manhattan, which has some of the best cars that grace the streets of New York,” Vasquez says. Although the club costs a pretty penny—and membership is a must—“you do have access to some of the best organized road trips, track days and exclusive events that will get any car aficionados blood racing.”
