There’s no shortage of unique and quirky shops in New York City, but across the Hudson, the popular Garden State cities Hoboken and Jersey City also boast a wide, and varied, array of out-of-the-ordinary retailers. Quimby Hightower, concierge at the W Hoboken, has four top picks for interesting shops in the area. In Hoboken, The Frayed Knot is a one-stop shop for everything from reasonably priced antiques and works by local artists to vintage and mid-century furnishings. The store also features restored pieces of its own design, as well as artisanal upholstery services and an in-house fabric library. The laid-back shop, which was featured on A&E channel’s Storage Wars: New York, is a great spot to go “if you are in need of inspiration,” Hightower says. “You can go there and purchase something or leave with a new idea.” On Hoboken’s popular Washington Street, Yes I Do! is the place where you can truly find “the perfect gift.” The stationery store sells unique cards, invitations and an eclectic mix of gifts. This is the place to go for Vera Bradley fans and the store has a “Buy 10, Get 1 Free” offer for every card you purchase. “Some of the cards are handmade from local artisans,” Hightower says. “They can individualize your personal stationery and they really know their product inside and out.” Also on Washington Street, Big Fun is a toy store that is truly a “one-of-a-kind, mom-and-pop experience,” Hightower says, adding that this is a good place to find a quick, fun item—with a touch of whimsy—for a birthday celebration. In nearby Jersey City, Another Man’s Treasure Vintage Store carries vintage fashions, accessories, shoes and jewelry for men and women from the early 1900s to the 1980s. “The clothes are in amazing condition and are reasonably priced,” Hightower says. The exceptionally knowledgeable staff often dons the merchandise and can give you a history lesson on the different fashions. “Whether it’s browsing or looking for an exclusive find—they will go to all lengths to assist!”
