Top Bakeries in the City
New York City is definitely the place to be for anyone with a sweet tooth, and Frederick Bigler, Chef Concierge at The Peninsula New York, has several top picks for your cravings fix. “Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery down on Rivington Street is a personal favorite,” he says. “I love the vibe, atmosphere and the delicious cupcakes—especially the to-die-for Ooey Gooey, a chocolate cake with chocolate almond buttercream.” Bigler also recommends the made-to-order layer cakes. For vegan and gluten-free finds, head to BabyCakes NYC™ on the Lower East Side. “I am amazed that not even I can tell these baked goods are healthy,” Bigler says. “Here, I can indulge guilt-free.” The bakery also sells cookbooks and has an online app. Grandaisy Bakery is another of Bigler’s top picks, and the European-style bakery’s selections of bread can be found at numerous restaurants throughout the city. For a full selection of baked goods, head to either one of Grandaisy’s shops in Tribeca or the Upper West Side. The bakery is “excellent at caterings as well,” Bigler adds. For birthday cakes, look no further than Billy’s Bakery NYC, with locations in Chelsea, Tribeca and The Plaza Food Hall—and make sure to try the banana cake with cream cheese frosting, Bigler’s favorite. “My friends love celebrating their birthdays with me, especially when I volunteer to bring the cake,” he says. Bigler’s other noteworthy selections include Bouchon Bakery and Balthazar Restaurant.
