There is no shortage of great Broadway and Off-Broadway shows to see this summer. For those folks taking in a performance with the family, David Almada, senior concierge at W New York, has three top picks for shows to see. “Matilda The Musical is by far the most jovial, family-friendly and educational comedy musical of its generation,” he says. The musical, which recently snagged several Tony Awards including a statuette for Gabriel Ebert in the category Best Performance By An Actor In A Featured Role In A Musical, is based on the children’s novel by famed author Roald Dahl and follows the story of a young girl who is searching for a better life. “This show sparks life for those who seek a well-talented young cast of actors with a meaningful goal to the story,” Almada continues. Another musical on the Great White Way that boasts a talented, young cast is Newsies. The musical, which won the 2012 Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Choreography, is about the young boys who sold newspapers on the streets of New York City in the late 19th century. “This incredible production will make your kids want to be part of this show, with all of the great selections of energetic and catchy songs,” Almada says. The long-running musical The Lion King is also one of Almada’s top picks. This musical, based on the feature-length, animated film, has won multiple Tony Awards in the past—including Best Scenic Design for a Musical, as well as Best Costume Design for a Musical. “This amazing production will transcend your emotions to a far away land,” Almada says. “A place filled with colors, magic and inspirational music.”
