Top Picks for Current and Upcoming Exhibitions in the City
Although several area museums and attractions have a slew of permanent collections that are definitely worth a gander, Bogna Strzelczyk-Flynn, concierge at The Westin New York Grand Central, has four top picks for not-to-miss current and upcoming exhibitions throughout the city. Take window-shopping along tony Fifth Avenue to another level at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the Costume Institute—housed on the lower level—is currently exhibiting PUNK: Chaos to Couture. The exhibition, on view thru August 14, examines the punk movement’s impact on high fashion—from its beginnings in the early 1970s through its influence today. “Rain or shine, your window-shopping along the marble halls of the MET will be well-suited for an afternoon stroll,” Strzelczyk-Flynn says. She advises history buffs to march quickly to the New-York Historical Society to see WWII & NYC before it ends May 27. “New Yorkers will tell you The Big Apple is the center of the world,” Strzelczyk-Flynn says, “and this exhibit shares how this cosmopolitan city that welcomes the tired, poor and huddled masses dealt with a world at war yearning to be free.” Those who love butterflies can see these enchanting creatures up close at the American Museum of Natural History’s Butterfly Conservatory thru May 27. The exhibition features up to 500 free-flying, tropical butterflies. At the popular exhibition space Discovery Times Square, visitors can view SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure beginning May 24. The exhibit will feature booty from under the sea, as well as science and technology used to work thousands of feet below the ocean’s surface. To miss it would be “unfathomable,” Strzelczyk-Flynn says.
