Top Three Art Galleries in the Lower East Side
New York City is home to several art galleries, with a large concentration in Manhattan’s west-side neighborhood Chelsea. However, in recent years, a number of galleries have popped up throughout the city’s other areas, including the Lower East Side—or LES to locals. Briana Davis, concierge at Sixty LES, shares her top three art galleries in this downtown neighborhood. “I would have to point out the Simon Preston Gallery and the Denny Gallery, which are my two top favorite galleries because they both look at and show contemporary art,” Davis says. “Art that is not solely object based but rather discusses the implications, both sociological and political, of an artist’s practice—that I love!” Davis says Simon Preston Gallery’s current exhibition, The Silent Way, is not to be missed. The group show, on view thru Feb. 23, examines the viewer’s understanding of perception and time. The exhibition features works by Robert Breer, Matthew Buckingham and Jenny Perlin. Russian-born artist Nikolai Ishchuk’s first solo exhibition in the U.S., Indeterminate Objects, is currently on view at Denny Gallery thru March 16. Davis also suggests a trip to Shin Gallery, which is the only gallery in New York City that specializes in Korean contemporary art. “This gallery prides in aiming to connect with the global art world by offering internationally unknown artists the possibility to show creative art,” Davis says. “I love to walk in and just see the amazing use of color used with the artist’s background and family culture. It takes you to another world; you can go in and get completely lost!” The Diminished Virtue is currently on view at the gallery thru April 11.
