Contrary to belief, New Yorkers love to laugh, and there is no shortage of comedy clubs in the city that serve up sidesplitting fun. David Moreno, chef concierge at Gramercy Park Hotel, shares his top three. First up, Moreno recommends Comedy Cellar in Greenwich Village. “The place is relaxed and hosts incredible talent,” Moreno says. The club plays hosts to the likes of several comedians you might have spotted on MTV, Comedy Central and Late Show with David Letterman. For highbrow humor, Moreno suggests a trip to Chelsea’s Gotham Comedy Club, which he describes as “a high-class establishment with a more refined crowd.” He also notes that the jokes aren’t as raunchy as one might find at other venues. The stellar roster of entertainment includes notable names like Anthony Anderson, from Law & Order fame; everyman Dave Attell; and Cash Cab host Ben Bailey. On the Upper East Side, legendary stand-up comedian and actor Rodney Dangerfield is immortalized at Dangerfield’s, a comedy nightclub he opened in 1969. “The space is like an old-school lounge and very comfortable,” Moreno says. In the club’s venerable history, it has welcomed comedy royalty, including Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock. And, in the style of its namesake, the club features “more risqué humor.”
