New York City is home to several farmers’ and food-focused markets, with vendors selling everything from packaged and prepared food to kitchenware and fresh produce. Gunter Kleemann, chef concierge at The New York Palace, has four top picks for markets to visit. “The Union Square Greenmarket is my top choice as it is in the heart of Manhattan and is in a crossroads section of the Flatiron District,” Kleemann says. At the market, which is open year-round—every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., visitors will find more than 1,000 varieties of fruits and vegetables. “It is an oasis of earthly delights that are of the highest quality and greatest variety,” Kleemann says. During the holiday season, the market morphs into a European-style, festive bazaar. Foodies will find innovative cuisine and more at SmorgasburgBrooklyn Flea’s food market.Smorgasburg Dumbo takes place every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Brooklyn Bridge Park on the Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) waterfront at the historic Tobacco Warehouse. While there, foodies will find packaged and prepared foods from purveyors from New York City and across the region, as well as other food-related items—including kitchen utensils, housewares and more. “You feel like you are in an ancient Roman structure,” Kleemann says. “And, you can walk to the river and lounge on the green lawn while enjoying great views.” Smorgasburg also has a location in Williamsburg, which is open every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Williamsburg waterfront at East River State Park. “This is a great opportunity to rub elbows with the locals and enjoy a great neighborhood feeling of well-being and optimism,” Kleemann says. Just keep in mind that no dogs are allowed at this location due to New York State Parks rules. If you head to Harlem, don’t miss the 125th Street Farmers’ Market—the flagship location for Governor Cuomo’s New York FreshConnect Farmers’ Market program. The market is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 3 to 8 p.m. until November 29. “Bring friends and family to this lively and bustling market,” Kleemann says. “Enjoy music and dance to the goods from local wineries and breweries.”
