It’s rare to find a place that offers high-quality haircuts without a lot of fuss, but celebrity hairstylist Rheanne White and the expert team at her new Tribeca salon embrace a laid-back attitude—without sacrificing precision and grace. A recent trip to the sleek salon with a wooden reception area, full-length mirrors, warm lighting and pots of orchids put me instantly at ease with its clean, modern design.
The days when women visited the beauty parlor once a week, seeing it as a home-away-from-home, are long gone. Yet I get a homey kind of feeling whenever I visit Salon SCK, my go-to place for cuts and color. Co-owned by several veterans of Vidal Sassoon (which partially explains the happy vibe; nothing like being in business for yourself, after years of working for The Man), the salon occupies a century-old building on the Upper West Side.
Last week, I found myself in major need of a haircut. It was Friday when I made this decision and called my go-to salon, Wellington Hair Spa, to make an appointment for Saturday. Unfortunately, my lovely stylist Kay was off this past weekend, but I was able to book an appointment with the owner, Patrick Wellington.
