Yinka Shonibare MBE: Wind Sculpture (SG) I

(March 7-Oct. 14, 2018)

British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE’s commission from the Public Art Fund for the southeast entrance to Central Park is a 23-foot-tall fiberglass sculpture that is reminiscent of a ship’s billowing sail. The hand-painted batik pattern on its surface is adapted from designs associated with West African textiles that, in turn, were exported to Africa from Dutch Indonesia by way of colonial trade routes in the 1800s. Among the themes associated with the work are cultural identity, the movement of people and ideas across borders in a globalized world, and the role of monuments in heterogeneous societies.
