The beginning of the year is a great time to pick up a new hobby—or dust off an old one! While in NYC, there are lots of opportunities to take part in some favorite pastimes either by yourself or with friends. Here are five spots to further expand your hobby ambitions.

The Uncommons (Greenwich Village): Board game lovers can meet likeminded people at this board game café that has the largest library of games on the East Coast—over 1,200 games—as well as a full menu of coffees, wraps, pastries, craft beer, ciders and more. You can come in and play games (there is a gaming fee) at your leisure, or check out the events calendar and see if there are any organized activities that pique your interest.

Midtown Comics (Times Square, Midtown East and Financial District): The largest comic book store in the U.S, comic book, graphic novel and manga fans can find new and recent comic releases, apparel and collectibles of favorite characters and series. Whether you are already an avid fan or looking to get into comics, this is one of the best spots in town to surround yourself with the comic culture.

Downtown Music Gallery (Two Bridges): Niche music fans can find jazz, rock, electronic, world, experimental and more genres of tunes at this shop. An internationally known store, in addition to a massive music collection, guests can also enjoy free live performances every Sunday night. Track down that vinyl you’ve been looking for! Discover a performer you’ve never heard of before but who is destined to be your new favorite!

Knitty City (Upper West Side): Besides having a super cute name, Knitty City has everything a knitter needs—colorful yarn, clothing and accessory patterns (some are free!), free events, classes for all experience levels and more. If you’re new to knitting, the staff will definitely have some purls of wisdom to share. (Sorry, I couldn’t help it.)

Fantasma Magic (Midtown West): Those who have mastered sleight of hand magic or are looking to learn some tricks (or rather, illusions for all you fellow “Arrested Development” fans), Fantasma Magic has books, DVDs, sets and more for all your magic needs. Cards, balls, silks, gaffs and other necessities can be found here. Entertain and be entertained.
