The Shop For All-Things NBC
The Shop For All-Things NBC
When you think of the National Broadcasting Company—more commonly known by its acronym NBC—you may think of how “Today” has been a staple morning source for news and entertainment or how much fun it is to watch “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and see what fun games Fallon plays with his guests. This is the network that gave us “Seinfeld,” “Friends,” “30 Rock” and, my favorite television comedy of all time, “Parks and Recreation.” NBC’s lineup, like its peacock logo, is both familiar and ever-evolving.
Also evolving—NBC’s retail experience.
I recently visited The Shop at NBC Studios. This sleek new space combines the network’s must-have apparel and accessories once featured in the NBC Experience store and has fun photo-op moments—like a chair from “The Voice” that you can sit on for a great Instagram pic, as well as a “Today” desk you can sit behind to pretend like you’re the newest host for this popular program that has been on air for 64 years. I was in the shop during the Olympics and there was even a Rio-themed medal stand where you could pose with gold, silver and bronze medals as part of an interactive experience.
NBC fans can find everything they need to represent their favorite show and the U.S. at The Shop at the NBC Studios. You may not have been able to go to the Olympics, but you sure could don a patriotic t-shirt or hat and watch NBC’s telecast of the 2016 summer games. I got a kick out of all the containers of pins I found around the shop—from Rio to Hashtag the Panda to the giant coffee mug from Central Perk—these little mementoes reminded me how much NBC programs have immersed themselves into popular culture. You can actually get a real giant coffee cup with the “Friends” logo on it, as well as the show mugs that Jimmy and Seth drink out of on their respective late night shows… or if you’re like me, you covet the shop’s “Troy and Abed in the Morning” mug from “Community.”
My favorite things at The Shop at NBC Studios might be the pillows, though. Throw pillows from “Today,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and the pretty peacock logo would all be perfect to snuggle up with while watching your favorite new fall show. I also wanted every “Saturday Night Live” shirt and hoodie. My dad introduced me to that show when I was in middle school so I’ve been watching it religiously ever since and have seen most prior episodes as well. It was fun to walk around The Shop at NBC Studios and see iconic images from classic sketches, as well as memorable moments from programs of the past and present. I genuinely appreciated the celebration of the history of the network mixed in with what’s on trend now. It’s always a nice reminder of where the television network started and how much its grown in the 70+ years its been around.
Located on the ground floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza via the Avenue of the Americas entrance, The Shop at NBC Studios is open Monday-Saturday from 8 am-9 pm, as well as Sunday from 8 am-6 pm. On Saturdays when “Saturday Night Live” is being broadcast live, the shop will be open until 1:30 am.
