A Leisurely Stroll Through Times Square’s Past
A Leisurely Stroll Through Times Square’s Past
October 1st, 2012
This past Friday, I went on a
walking tour of Times Square. I have to admit, as a local, this is an area I don’t find myself in too often; however, there’s a lot to be said for “The Crossroads of the World,” including incredible shopping, dining and entertainment around every corner. On Friday, I got to step into the past with The Times Square History Tour, presented by Manhattan Walking Tour. Just so you know, The Times Square Alliance tapped this company, as well as Walkin’ Broadway, as the two official Times Square Walking Tours—so these guys know what they’re talking about. I don’t want to give too much away, but I did learn a lot about Times Square on this tour—thanks to our informed guide, Jonah, who came prepared with tons of anecdotes and a slideshow with pictures of Old New York, so we could examine our surroundings then and now. Manhattan Walking Tour also prefers smaller groups, eight people or fewer, so it was always easy to hear our guide. I now know the origin of the New Year’s Eve ball drop, all about the Paramount Building and much more. Coolest thing I learned? Disney, specifically The Lion King, saved Times Square. Want to know what I’m talking about? Head to the Times Square Museum and Visitor Center for the next Times Square History Tour. For details, click here. Walking tours will also be available during Open House New York Oct. 6th & 7th.
