Top Three Restaurants in TriBeCa
The Triangle Below Canal Street, or TriBeCa as it’s more commonly known, is home to cutting-edge nightlife, galleries and the world-famous namesake Tribeca Film Festival. The ‘hood is also a pretty popular post for foodies, with a wide range of cuisine offered in trendy, upscale and low-key eateries. Franck Hermann has been a concierge at Smyth TriBeCa, A Thompson Hotel, for the past seven months and here he recommends his top three restaurants in the area.
Bâtard serves up European cuisine by Austrian-born Chef Markus Glocker, who’s worked with the likes of Gordon Ramsay and Charlie Trotter. “This relaxing atmosphere, very much like TriBeCa, is a lively place with golden light and cozy seats,” Hermann says, adding that patrons can enjoy an extensive prix fixe menu. What to get? Hermann says must-try menu items include: Roasted Beets “Linzer,” with caramelized hazelnuts, red currants and romaine hearts; Veal Tenderloin, with “tramezzini,” trumpet mushrooms, sweetbreads and sauce diable; and the Duck Breast, with black mission figs, mushroom crêpe and duck liver mousse.
For a taste of Italy in Lower Manhattan, Locanda Verde, which cites Robert De Niro and Chef Andrew Carmellini as two of its owners, is an “iconic and trendy corner restaurant and certainly the best restaurant in TriBeCa, and probably Manhattan, to share some tasty Italian small plates with a perfect pairing from the extensive wine list,” Hermann says. “It is always crowded, which makes for some truly beautiful people-watching.” Must-have menu items include My Grandmother's Ravioli, a variety of crostini, and, for the meat lover, “the Steak Tartare Piemontaise, with Wagyu beef, hazelnuts and black truffle, will make your day,” Hermann says.
The folks behind Locanda Verde will open their newest restaurant, Little Park, at Smyth in November.
With brick-walled industrial style, Laotian-inspired Southeast Asian eatery Khe-Yo “makes you feel like you're in the night market in Bangkok,” Hermann says. “[It] offers beautiful dishes, exotic and delicious, despite being a bit spicy for some people.” Hermann also says the restaurant has a pretty great cocktail menu, citing the Lao Lao—Summer Peach & Ginseng infused in Cognac—as his favorite. On the food front, Hermann says opt for the Spicy Magret Duck & Watercress appetizer, with banana flower & crispy duck tongues; and the Berkshire Spare Ribs, with smashed long bean & cherry tomato from the large plates menu.
