Top Attractions in Gramercy and the Flatiron District
Sure Midtown and Lower Manhattan are home to some of the city’s most iconic buildings, restaurants and attractions, but there is a lot to be said for the many other NYC neighborhoods. Joy Mishani, concierge at Gramercy Park Hotel, shares her top picks for places to visit in Gramercy and the adjoining Flatiron District. In Gramercy—the area bordered by 14th St. to the south, First Ave. to the east, 23rd St. to the north, and Park Ave. So. to the west—Mishani suggests a trip to the popular eatery Gramercy Tavern. “Opened by famed restaurateur Danny Meyer, this restaurant is the crown jewel of the area,” Mishani says—adding that it’s a very popular pick with Gramercy Park Hotel guests. At the restaurant, which opened in 1994, diners can enjoy contemporary American fare (think Pasture Raised Chicken & Sausage, Polenta, Salsify, Bitter Greens and Cranberries; and Roasted & Braised Lamb, Sunchokes, Hen of the Woods Mushrooms and Quinoa). In the Flatiron District—bounded by 20th St., Union Square and Greenwich Village to the south; Sixth and Seventh aves. and Chelsea to the west; 25th St. and NoMad to the north; and Lexington Ave./Irving Place, and Gramercy Park to the east— Mishani says one would be remiss to not take a photo in front of the neighborhood’s namesake building. Located at 23rd St., Broadway and Fifth Ave., the historic, triangular-shaped Flatiron Building is so named because it resembles a cast-iron clothes iron. A number of shops occupy the ground floor and Mishani says great photos can be taken in front of the building if you stand in Worth Square—a small square that rests a little north of the structure’s apex. Across the street from Worth Square, Mishani says Eataly is also a must-visit destination. “This Italian food emporium, which is co-owned by famed Chef Mario Batali, is very popular,” she says. While there, patrons can purchase prepared foods, groceries, cookbooks and more. The sprawling space even boasts a rooftop restaurant, Birreria, a great place to take in views of the bustling neighborhood.
