Top Picks for Broadway Musicals
A night out at the theater is a popular activity in New York City, and the Great White Way is always teeming with larger-than-life productions. Loida Diaz, Concierge at Trump International Hotel & Tower® New York, shares her top three picks for musicals to see on Broadway. “Motown the Musical is one of the best live shows I've ever seen,” Diaz says. “The music is obviously the basis of the story, but the performances are amazing!” The show follows Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to music mogul and showcases popular songs by artists whose careers he helped launch along the way. “The story is good but the constant hit after hit is just so much fun,” Diaz says. “The young Michael Jackson really seals the deal.” For a night of sidesplitting laughter, head to The Book of Mormon. The Tony Award-winning musical, from the creators of the animated hit TV show South Park, follows two young Mormon missionaries and their adventures in Uganda. “I laughed until I cried,” Diaz admits. “It would be worth coming to NYC just to see this performance.” She adds that there isn’t a weak character in the cast, the plot moves along quickly, the songs are upbeat and jazzy, and the dialogue is pertinent and intelligent. Last but not least, Diaz suggests a trip to The Al Hirschfeld Theatre to see Kinky Boots—recent winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Musical. The show, based on a 2005 British film of the same name, is about a struggling, family-owned English shoe factory that attempts to avoid bankruptcy by producing footwear for drag artists. “This musical has all the elements of an unforgettable show: great music, outstanding performers, a touching story and lots of fun,” Diaz says.
