Ulysses' Folk House

Umami Greenwich Village

The celebrated West Coast burger joint hits the West Village, introducing the unique (and addictive) umami-focused menu—thatsavory Japanese “fifth taste,” after sweet, sour, bitter and salty—to the NYC masses. Featured are the original umami burger (shiitake mushroom, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, Parmesan crisp, umami ketchup) and the location specific specialty, the 5 spice duck burger (house-ground duck, peach-apple chutney, Chinese 5 spice, Madagascar pepper,crispy duck skin, garlic ailoi and caramelized fennel). Umberto's Clam House

Seafood specialties such as scungilli, calamari, baked clams and oysters, as well as chops and housemade pasta dishes, inside a circa-1972 dining room famously known for being the site of the murder of NYC gangster Joe Gallo. L & D (daily). $$

Uncle Nick's

Diners can choose from a variety of dips, meat kebabs and the restaurant’s specialty—grilled sardines—at this brick-walled space. L & D (daily).

Uncle Vanya Cafe

Named for the Anton Chekhov play, this Russian restaurant offers Beef Stroganoff, blini, flavored vodkas and vareniki—dumplings filled with potatoes and onions—in a low-key, domestic atmosphere. L (M-Sa), D (nightly). $$

Union Square Cafe

Danny Meyer’s hot spot is known for such classics as ricotta gnocchi, tagliarini with summer squash and mushrooms and olive oil poached halibut with squash ribbons, chaneterelles and sungold tomatoes. L & D (daily). $$$

Untitled at the Whitney

Seasonal American fare in a window-lined, Renzo Piano-designed space located in the Whitney Museum of American Art, from restaurateur Danny Meyer. L (M-F), D (nightly), Brunch (Sa & Su). $$$

Up Thai

This wood-paneled, rustic chic Upper East Side restaurant serves traditional Thai cuisine, including spring rolls, dumplings and curry dishes like massaman curry made with potatoes, onion, avocado, peanuts and coconut milk. L & D (daily). $$

Upland

Named after Chef Justin Smillie’s northern California hometown, this trendy spot features Italian and coastal California-inspired dishes, such as blistered shishito peppers with bottarga (cured fish roe) and a variety of housemade pastas. L (M-F), D (nightly), Brunch (Sa & Su).
