Bus/Subway

Approximately 5,900 air-conditioned buses provide reliable service on over 300 routes to almost anywhere in the city. Bus stops are located about every two blocks on street corners and are marked by a sign pole with a bus emblem and route number. While some buses run 24-hours-a-day, most operate between 5 AM and 2 AM. Bus schedules and route maps are posted on most bus stops. All buses are equipped with wheelchair accessible lifts. Check the sign on the front of the bus. If you’re not sure it’s the bus you want, ask the bus operator. Subways run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are 24 subway lines designated by either a route number or letter. Subways run every 2-to-5 minutes during rush hours, 10-to-15 minutes during the day and about every 20 minutes between midnight and 5 AM. Signs above the platform edge tell you which trains stop there and the direction of travel. Some subway entrances only provide service in one direction, so be sure to check before you pay. No matter how far you ride, the base subway and local bus fare is $2.50, payable by MetroCard. Buses also accept exact change (but no dollar bills or pennies, please.) For more information, call
