The Rockettes Through the Eyes of a Teenager

The Rockettes Through the Eyes of a Teenager

Laura and son Alex at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular

Though I now live about an hour from Manhattan in Warwick, New York, I still miss my days of being a Manhattanite. Everything seemed a stone's throw from my apartment on E. 30th Street, and I was one of those city people that took advantage of it all: from the conventional and showy (Broadway, Fifth Avenue shopping) to the offbeat and off-the-radar (a Vietnamese restaurant in the East Village, a trip to the Houdini Museum in Midtown). This year, I decided to start the holiday season off in a most traditional and spectacular way, by taking my 13-year-old son into the city to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Though said child is a newly minted teenage boy who loves NYC, he is also a typical 13-year-old: cynical, brooding and more likely to roll his eyes at anything his mother enjoys rather than embrace it. Somehow, knowing what a good mother-son memory this would be, I convinced him to go, and so, on a recent Wednesday night, we found ourselves with the rest of the crowd, waiting in line to get into the show. The music hall is, off course, spectacular with or without Santa and the Rockettes, but from the moment the show began to the finish, when we walked out into a faux snowstorm, we (and most importantly, my son) were enchanted (and yes, I don't use that word loosely in describing Alex's reactions). The 3-D films and special effects were electrifying, with Santa flying all over NYC in his sled: All around us, children were oohing and aahing with delight, even Alex! Then came the Rockettes. Costumes, dancing and sets, were, as always, perfect and I never cease getting a chill down my back when, upon the first choreographed kicks, the audience bursts into thunderous applause. Finally, the Nativity Scene, so serene and stunning (especially with the use of real animals), really made us stop and contemplate the true meaning of Christmas. But perhaps the best part of all was seeing my son, grinning from ear to ear, pretty much from the moment we took our seats, until we got up to leave. Leave it to the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular to make even the most jaded of teens a believer again.
