Dream On

Dream On

Talk about plot twists: As announced on Sept. 30, the curtain has come down before it ever went up on Rebecca, the on-again, off-again new Broadway musical (from Europe!) based on the Daphne du Maurier novel and Oscar-winning Alfred Hitchcock classic. So, if you were dreaming of going to Manderlay (much less returning to said English country house), fuhgedaboudit. This house has truly gone up in flames, its financial foundation as shaky as a Wall Street rally. The coup de grace? Supposedly a mysterious, malicious email sent to a new backer, who quickly left the scene. Perhaps the real musical is in the musical’s meltdown, not its literary and cinematic source. Seen at the final preview (Sept. 26) of  Manhattan Theatre Club’s terrifically entertaining and timely An Enemy of the People: John Lithgow leading the well-deserved standing ovation for Boyd Gaines, his co-star from last season’s The Columnist; and AndrewAndrew, two prepster DJs who dress alike, down to the frayed collars of their identical brown gingham shirts.
