Working Out The Kinks

Working Out The Kinks

Haven, a veteran SoHo day spa, has a new treatment. Cunningly called the Geek Massage, it's aimed at those who spend all day huddled into desks and terminals--not that there's any reason that people who run all day, stand all day or do a combination of all three couldn't enjoy its benefits either.

You enter the spa's cozy, woodsy confines (even the lockers are made of timber), don a padded robe, are led to a darkened chamber. The therapist then offers you a choice of three T Spheres: rubber balls infused with the scent of rose-geranium, lavender or peppermint. She then spends the next hour thoroughly massaging muscles from head to toe, making strategic use of the balls throughout to coax open knots or relieve tight spots; sometimes you lie on them; sometimes they lie on you—kneaded into your skin, the rubber is more gentle than fingers. Even so, this  massage tends to be deep, and more vigorous than your standard Swedish rub-down. But it hurts so good.

And afterwards, you feel pleasantly invigorated, as long-cramped muscles stretch and breathe. You get to take a pair of T Spheres home with you, too. Just to tide you over, until the need to seek Haven beckons once more.
