Skin Test

Skin Test

I see and sample a lot of skin-care products in my line of work. It’s a cushy job, but someone has to do it. And it always fascinates me to pick up on the vibe the manufacturer is broadcasting, the cosmetics karma so to speak . Some go for an aura of glitz and glamour – “selling hope in a jar”, as one industry exec (Estée Lauder, I believe) put it. Others go for the down-home, organic, all-natural, ain’t-nothing-artificial-here approach. And still others go for what I call the Scientific Method—the reassuringly professional air of a doctor or researcher. Cellure, a brand which has its own boutique down in SoHo, is one of the latter. And, like any good scientist, it believes in testing. Plenty of skin-care purveyors offer demonstrations, but Cellure goes far beyond a daub of moisturizer on the palm. Upon entering the gleaming, white-on-white white store, its clinical crispness softened by wood panels and a spray of orchids, a client is given a bag of samples and ushered into a mirrored booth—kind of like an examining room in a chic doctor’s office—where, guided by instructions on a touch-screen video, he or she tries each item in the line’s five-step regimen. Then comes a detailed discussion with a staffer about the products, which use adult stem-cell extracts to restart, recode, rework (to borrow the names of the routine’s steps) and, in general, get the complexion glowing. Long live the art of experimentation. Cellure, 422 W. Broadway, 646.410.0621
