A Million-Dollar Smile
A Million-Dollar Smile
Curiosity got the best of me. For months I have been hearing about Dr. Linhart’s Park Avenue dental practice, which not only provides virtually every kind of dental specialty—from root canal to restorations—but also offers any Tom, Dick or Lois a spectacular, whiter smile worthy of a red carpet superstar. And so, on a recent September afternoon, I signed on for a whitening treatment. The offices are located in the elegant Helmsley Building, on the 11th floor, and the long, carpeted hallways made you feel more like you were in the hushed luxurious environs of a Manhattan apartment building as opposed to the building of a dentist office. Inside, a cozy waiting room with Persian carpets and a plush sofa greeted me, but I was soon treated to a peek of the VIP room: a private dental lounge with a small living room, kitchen and rest room for those clients who tend to come with … well, an entourage. The operatory room even has a frosted glass paneled wall between the living room area and the dental chair for ultimate privacy between patient and guests.
A few moments later I was taken down yet another hall (the office boasts 13 operatory rooms) and seated to start my treatment. First, the dental hygienist did a brief cleaning to remove any recent plaque buildup. Next, impressions were taken for the trays I would be taking home to use for the 5 days following the procedure. The procedure itself was a strange, but completely comfortable process involving a lip and cheek retractor to widen my mouth for the whitening mixture, a gum barrier to protect the gums from the procedure and a blue light to enhance the whitening experience. During the whole process, noise-cancellation headphones are offered to use to listen to music (the office also provides an iPod or an iPad for your listening enjoyment in case you don’t have any music with you). For the next 90 minutes or so, I drifted off into that delicious neither here-nor-there sleep, with the assistants periodically coming in to wash away the old solution, dry it and then reapply. After about an hour and a half, I got up, looked in the mirror, and –wow! My teeth were indeed dramatically whiter than when I walked in. I walked out with a package of goodies including the trays and gel that I was to use for the next few days to enhance the treatment and Dr. Linhart’s own PearlinBrite brightening toothpaste that my co-worker swears by. The procedure, which costs $1,000 includes the take-home kit. I felt ready for my close-up, indeed!
