The days when women visited the beauty parlor once a week, seeing it as a home-away-from-home, are long gone. Yet I get a homey kind of feeling whenever I visit Salon SCK, my go-to place for cuts and color. Co-owned by several veterans of Vidal Sassoon (which partially explains the happy vibe; nothing like being in business for yourself, after years of working for The Man), the salon occupies a century-old building on the Upper West Side. There’s a residential feel to the exposed-brick, light-flooded premises: The stylists’ stations are wood tables, adorned with little lamps and orchids. Refreshments—tea, white wine, biscotti—are constantly being offered. Bottles of Kerastase and Shu Uemura hair care products gleam like colored glass on the shelves. Suffice to say, the hair care (for both men and women) is excellent—you watch your fellow clients get better looking before your very eyes—and the transformations don’t stop at the scalp. Sharing space in the salon is Giella Cosmetics, a custom-blended line of mineral-based makeup; their aestheticians do makeovers, eyebrows, etc. Honestly, sometimes I just don’t want to leave.
