Gingerly Speaking

Being that I always ask for extra ginger with my sushi, how could I resist the invite to get a Wakaya ginger scalp treatment at the Patrick Melville Salon in Rockefeller Center? The salon is bustling at midday yet not overly noisy: plush chocolate-brown leather chairs at the styling and heating stations, and stainless steel counters, along with black-and-portraits of stunning models lend a contemporary, glamorous feel to the place. And so, I settled into one of the chocolate seats, waiting to get ginger-ized. The process itself was a real treat, in both feel and scent: First, a clarifying shampoo is deeply massaged into the hair to rid the follicles of all extraneous product and other impurities. Then, two hair masks: one, a protein enriched treatment (vitamin B5, vitamin E and vanilla), to strengthen: the other, rosemary, aloe and acai ingredients, to hydrate. “You mix both together, along with the organic powdered Wakaya ginger, for the maximum result: it will produce shine and plump out the cuticle, allowing for healthier and better hair growth,” enthused my styling sage Lori Esposito. While I waited for the mixture to harden into a clay-like texture under a dryer, I was in ginger heaven, inhaling the subtle yet luscious scent. After that, Lori applied a clear gloss for an even finer sheen. The result? In all honesty, my hair truly seemed to have a shine and softness I’m not sure I’ve ever seen. And, considering I am anxious for my short cut to grow into a longer bob, I am even more excited with the possibility of quicker hair growth. I say, extra ginger for everyone!
