I’ve always been a sucker for a cosmetics firm’s “gift with purchase”—those limited–time promotions in which you spend a certain amount at the brand’s counter at a department store, and you get a goodie bag of five or so sample-sized items from the makeup or skin-care line. The mini compacts of eye shadow or rouge are perfect carrying around in a purse; the baby jars and tubes of cleanser, toner, etc. are tailor-made for trips. In fact, I’ve been known to buy stuff just to get the gift with purchase – which of course is just what they were expecting me to do -- but when you need just enough moisturizer to carry you through a long weekend away, sometimes you have no choice. It’s always nice, however, when treating yourself also helps out others, and that’s where the latest-gift-with-purchase from Clarins (a longtime source for giving good GWPs) comes in. The deal is, buy two products—one should be skin-care—from the Clarins counter at Macy’s. You get a seven-piece, pint-size regimen, from cleanser to line-correcting serum (in the form of a portable wand); 10 children around the world get a healthy meal at school—financed by Clarins. It’s a tie-in with Lauren Bush Lauren’s FEED Program, a fund-raising nonprofit for the UN’s World Food Programme; apparently Clarins has already provided over one million meals via FEED since 2011; they’re aiming for 2.5 million over two years. The makeup world is all about illusion—but this seems a transparently good thing.
Clarins “Gift with Purchase” promotion runs April 10-20 at Macy’s stores throughout the country. Here in NYC, that’s 151 W. 34th St., btw Broadway & Seventh Ave., 212 695.4400.
