Canadian Luxury Fashion Comes to SoHo This Month

Last week, I was invited to a fashion popup in SoHo. I love SoHo and Nolita especially for its European-reminiscent cobblestone streets and high brow boutiques. I arrived early and nervously gave myself a quick once over before walking into my fashion interview with French-Canadian luxury designer Marie Saint Pierre. According to the Montreal Gazette, "She has become a part of Quebec’s cultural fabric — a fabric she has cut, pleated and tailored in her own inimitable way. Marie Saint Pierre is a veritable emblem of local fashion." Commonly referred to the 'Diane von Furstenberg of Canada,' Marie Saint Pierre is celebrating 30 years in the fashion industry by showcasing select pieces from her fall collection and her couture Atelier collection in an open, industrial retail space in SoHo.

Surrounded by admirers and friends, Marie took a few moments to speak with me about this incredible milestone—30 years in a turbulent industry, from the internet and social media to overseas labor conflicts and dramatic trend swings, Marie has navigated through it all. “I build a story with my designs—to last this long in fashion, you have to have a point of view. You have to have something to say—it has to be personal,” she tells me through a thick French accent. “You also have to be a little crazy to push your work on people, but I’ve always been a non-conventional person.”

Coming from a family of art collectors, Marie met many artists that became family friends over food and wine—as is the French way. One artist, Jean-Paul Riopelle, told her as a young child to look at the world with many different perspectives. This began to shape her perception, allowing her to gather inspiration from ‘truly seeing’ the many dimensions of everything around her, molding her imagination and influencing the colors and textures of her designs.

Marie also embraces the beauty of imperfection, because for her, It’s all about movement. “I love the playfulness and imperfection of movement. You don't know how your clothes will look when a person moves, but the uncertainty is more beautiful—I need people in my clothes to make them alive.” She designs for those who are on-the-go; she wants you to feel beautiful and comfortable in her clothes like sitting on a comfy couch—her fashion-forward pieces easily become staple items for all shapes and sizes.

Marie is unstoppable—she designs five to six collections a year all over the world, she is an entrepreneur, mother, an environmentalist and that's just the beginning. She believes going with the flow and not fearing change is what has kept her in the forefront of the fashion industry for the last 30 years. “I get bored if I'm not challenged. I try to keep moving forward and I don't look back. I wake up in the morning and I always feel like...I can do more.”

Maison Marie Saint Pierre's SoHo popup is open until Oct. 30th. Her Fall and Atelier Collections will be available on site. The popup is in partnership with OOB magazine and will showcase modern lamps from Lampi Lampa, art from artist Fran Lamothe, and shoe collections from Zvelle.
