The POWERHOUSE ARENA, More Than Just a Bookstore

With the advent of e-books and the like, some people might say brick-and-mortar bookstores are a thing of the past. I’m not one of those people. Call me old-school, but I like the idea of perusing the shelves looking for titles or subjects that peak my interests. I also love art, so I was on cloud nine, as they say, after a recent trip to DUMBO, Brooklyn’s The POWERHOUSE ARENA, which boasts an interesting selection of curated design and photography books—plus a gallery and more.

Art book publisher powerHouse Books launched The POWERHOUSE ARENA in fall 2006, and, besides selling a number of interesting titles, the large space (complete with 24-foot ceilings in the sprawling 5,200-square-foot ground floor) is also a gallery, boutique, performance and events space—hosting thought-provoking exhibitions, installations, presentations, displays, viewings, performances and readings by a number of literary greats.

Visitors can plant themselves in the amphitheater-style seating section while leisurely flipping through art-based books, as well as non-fiction, lifestyle, illustrated, and New York-themed titles. Or, get a head start on holiday season shopping and browse the large selection of handmade, one-of-a-kind stationery; design gifts; and locally designed jewelry and apparel. This is also the perfect place to pick up hard-to-find children’s books, art and game kits.

A central staircase leads from the floor to the 560-square-foot On the mezzanine-level, Arena Sky Lounge—a multifunctional gallery, V.I.P. lounge and green room—features a selection of limited edition powerHouse titles and is home to a rotating series of exhibitions.
