The North Face—the innovative outdoor lifestyle brand known for its adventure-friendly apparel like those cozy fleece tops—recently opened its largest location in the world right here in New York City. This global flagship store, situated in the historic Manufacturers Trust Company Building at the junction of Fifth Avenue & 43rd Street, offers shoppers two spacious floors to peruse, as well as products and experiences you won’t find anywhere else.

A must-have gift for this holiday season is The North Face Japan Collection backpack. These boxy bags are sturdy and stylish—perfect for all sorts of situations from travel (great for a carry-on) to hiking to going to school and more. The Fifth Avenue store is the only store in the whole U.S. to carry these bags and offers several designs. The bags will be available for purchase on November 30, but only in-store. Japan Collection apparel will also be available at that time.

Speaking of backpacks, The North Face is bringing back the pack that started it all. The brand’s Original Day Pack was first available alongside climbing gear in 1968 and its signature durability, simplicity and craftsmanship lasted 10 years later with the introduction of The North Face’s Basecamp Soft Duffel (available in small and large sizes). The North Face carries a wide variety of water resistant duffle bags that are great for luggage, camping and more.

In select nationwide The North Face locations, including the Fifth Avenue store, is a series of limited edition footwear in collaboration with Publish Brand called “Midnight in Antarctica.” These stunning navy cold-weather kicks feature leather and GORE-TEX® (depending on the style), which means they’re durable for when you’re tackling the elements.

The North Face has also collaborated with New Era Hats for some fashionable fitted hats. New colors will be available every few months at the Fifth Avenue store!

Really fun for this holiday season is the Fifth Avenue store’s Lot, Stock and Barrel pop-up custom embroidery and chain stitching station. Located on the first floor as soon as you walk in the door, this LA company can sew patches (assortment available), monograms or customized script onto anything (hats, apparel, etc.) that can fit under the needles of their old-timey sewing machines. This is a great way to personalize a loved one’s gift or make your own wearable memory of your trip to NYC!

The second floor of the store is designed in such an efficient way that the only thing you need to figure out is where to start. Need children’s apparel? It’s near “Golden Arbor,” Harry Bertoia’s sculpture screen of intersecting metal panels that remains on public display as part of the building’s landmark status. Going camping? Tents, sleeping bags and more are set up so you see and feel the materials used for these durable products. There’s also an interactive climbing wall!

The North Face has three stores in Manhattan: The North Face Fifth Avenue flagship store (510 Fifth Ave., at W. 43rd St., 212.221.1929), The North Face SoHo Area (139 Wooster St., btw Prince & W. Houston sts., 212.260.1000) and The North Face Upton New York City (2101 Broadway, at W. 73rd St., 212.362.1000). Each location carries footwear, outdoors-friendly equipment and apparel—including the award-winning Summit Series.

Along with the grand opening of the Fifth Avenue location, The North Face is also celebrating its 50th year in action! Since 1966, The North Face has been providing explorers, athletes and extraordinary ordinary people like you and me with reliable gear to take on the world. This company also supports environmental preservation (a cause near and dear to my heart) and urges people to get out there and discover how great the great outdoors really is.
