Let’s Get Specific!
Have you ever been on an exhaustive search for one particular item, and, after visiting two or three stores, frustratingly thought to yourself “it would be great if there was a destination devoted to [fill in the blank]”? Well, in a perfect world, there would be, but NYC comes pretty darn close. Here, DAILY NYC presents you with a roundup of places that have mastered the art of selling one particular item (or, closely related items). Let the shopping begin!
Searching for the perfect timepiece? Watch company Citizen’s 1,300-square-foot flagship store in Times Square is the ideal place to shop everything from simple timepieces to more complicated underwater-friendly gadgets that can even measure your depth or altitude. Many watches use Eco-Drive technology, which means these gizmos get power from any light source—natural or artificial—instead of from batteries, which, let’s be honest, are so passé. Plus, the tech-savvy store features state-of-the-art interactive and hands-on displays, including a wall featuring exclusive offerings.
Yunhong Chopsticks Shop
Know someone that collects chopsticks? This Chinatown outpost is devoted to the eating utensil. Not the run-of-the-mill wooden version that comes with your General Tsao’s Chicken and side of fried rice, this store carries intricately designed varieties—from training chopsticks for kids (complete with cute characters) to stainless steel, Chinese Zodiac and Sandalwood/Silver Inlay chopsticks. Sets of two to ten-plus pairs are available.
Nestled in a brick townhouse on the Upper East Side, this quaint shop is bursting at the seams with antique, vintage and modern buttons for sale—housed in display cases and wooden drawers throughout the space. The store’s ample collection of these tiny, delicate objects has origins in many different countries and time periods. Tender Buttons receives new buttons every day and many regulars come in frequently to find new accessories to add to their wardrobe.
Space Cowboy Boots
As the name suggests, this intimate Nolita shop is teeming with Western footwear from brands such as Stallion Boot Co., Old Gringo Boots, and more—plus, the store carries its own brand, Planet Cowboy, which will expand its line in spring/summer with new styles for men, women and children. Visitors can also shop belts, buckles and the store’s very own line of T-Shirts.When you visit, make sure to say hello to the shop’s resident celebrity, Honeygirl, a cute little chihuahua that’s also immortalized on one of Space Cowboy’s T-shirts.
Touted as the ultimate light bulb store, this Upper East Side mainstay has illuminated residential, commercial and industrial locales since 1980. The store carries incandescent, Halogen, Fluorescent, Mercury, Sodium and Metal Halide Bulbs of every type. Services include lighting consultations, energy efficiency surveys, room lighting, color analysis and more.
Stack’s Bowers Galleries
In Midtown West, Stack’s Bowers Galleries is one of America’s leading auction firms, which specializes in consignment, appraisal and wholesale trade of U.S. coins and currency, world coins and ancient coins. Since the 1930s, this has been the place for anyone and everyone interested in art, history and, of course, numismatics—from serious collectors looking for that rare find, to investors searching for a sound purchase and kids starting their very own coin collections. Stack’s Bowers’ items, which can be described as historic works of art, not only cross all geographical categories and time periods but also price points.
