Get an Oscar-Worthy Look in NYC to Watch the 89th Annual Academy Awards

It’s time for the most glamorous Hollywood event of the year—the Oscars! Yes, I know we’re in New York City and the Oscars take place in Los Angeles, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still get ready for them. And by “get ready for them,” I mean Get. Ready. For. Them. There’s no reason we can’t rock the same amazing looks—for less!—as the A-listers who will be walking the red carpet on Sunday night.

Here’s where to assemble your ensemble and the hot spots where you can show it off during Oscar night.

The Dress

Rent the Runway is not only a website where you can snag the hottest designer looks for less (since you’re renting a gorgeous gown instead of buying it), but there is a flagship store in NYC that you can go to and find a dress in person instead of waiting for the dress to come in the mail. You select if you want to rent the garment for four or eight days and then you return the dress via the mail (for free) or back to the store. What’s great about Rent the Runway is it has loads of styles from 300+ designers—think Badgley Mischka, Monique Lhuillier and more—that range in size from 0-22. You can also rent accessories! Visit the store in NYC any day of the week at 30 W. 15th St., btw Fifth & Sixth aves. (M-W 10am-8pm; Th & F 10am-9pm; Sa 10am-8pm; Su 10am-7pm). Walk-ins are welcome, or book your appointment here.

Jewelry and Handbag

The stars may have to give back their jewels at the end of the night, but you shouldn’t have to. A Second Chance is a family owned and operated resale boutique that sells gently used and new designer everything—handbags, clothes, shoes and more. The jewelry selection at A Second Chance is stunning and there’s no better place to score authentic necklaces ranging from vintage to more modern pieces. Same with handbags! I know the ladies on the red carpet will have their sparkly clutches, but sometimes you need a bit bigger of a bag. (I am Team Tote forever and always.) Treat yourself to a designer bag, available in a variety of sizes and colors. A Second Chance has two boutiques—one on the Upper East Side (1111 Lexington Ave., 2nd Floor, btw E. 77th & E. 78th sts.—open M-F from 11am-7pm; Sa 11am-6pm; closed Sunday) and in SoHo (155 Prince St., at W. Broadway—open M-F from 11am-7pm; Sa 11am-6pm; Su noon-5pm).

Makeup

In Hollywood, the stars don’t go to get their makeup done, the makeup artists come to them. In NYC, you can do the same! Make an appointment with Book Your Look, an NYC-only service where you can choose your date and makeup artist (based on your needs, budget and style). After booking your appointment online and receiving confirmation, a professional makeup artist who has done jobs at such glamorous places like New York Fashion Week, photo shoots and more will come to your hotel room or home and do your makeup for you!

Hair

Book Your Look also offers home hair styling, though through a separate booking. Women with curly hair can get the best styling at Ouidad, The Curl Experts®. In addition to exceptional service, Ouidad is big on educating its customers about maintaining curly hair and keeping it healthy, frizz-free and manageable. Ouidad has specific products for all types of curls—loose, classic, tight and kinky—because, while curls are a global phenomenon, not all curls are the same. (Ouidad is located at 37 W. 57th St., 4th Floor, btw Fifth & Sixth aves., and is open Tu-Sa at 9 am. Close times vary per day.) If you’re in the mood for something simple—no cut or color or styling needed—then head to one of NYC’s Drybar locations for a blowout. There are over a dozen Drybars in NYC in as many neighborhoods, so check the website for the closest one to you!
