Gear for the Great Outdoors (And More) at Fjällräven

This past week, I went to an event in SoHo at Fjällräven—a Swedish store that specializes in outdoor gear, ranging from durable backpacks and tents to apparel and sleeping bags. Once I entered the large brightly lit space, I instantly felt as if I’d been transported from the urban, trendy SoHo landscape to a rustic ski lodge in Aspen. While I noshed on Tinga Tostadas with braised beef and sipped on refreshing white wine and watermelon sangria (provided by Mexican eatery Papatzul), I perused the store’s merchandise, including heavy-duty coats and parkas (perfect for the oncoming winter weather), lighter apparel and a nifty selection of sunglasses with wooden frames (think zebra wood, teak, walnut and oak) by Oregon-based company Shwood. The back of the space houses a large wall display of Kånken backpacks—a popular seller (and staple for hipsters) that comes in several colors and styles. Great for all weather, the product is made of G-1000® material, which is tightly woven to make it water resistant. Jackets, trousers and other bags are also made with the same material. With an eye on customer service, Fjällräven employs an on-site tailor who can tweak items to customers’ specifications (think tapered pants or additional pockets), and, every now and then, visitors are treated to Swedish candy as they shop Fjällräven’s extensive list of offerings. Also make sure to check out the store’s NoLIta location.
