October 6 is Mad Hatter Day, which celebrates my favorite character (the Hatter) from one of my favorite books of all time (Lewis Caroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland"). The Hatter is known for his oversized chapeau that bears a label reading “10/6”—meaning the cost of the hat is 10 shillings and a sixpence. Mad Hatter Day is meant to celebrate silliness, but we can make it a day to celebrate great headwear. Here are five NYC spots where you can acquire your own signature hat.

FlameKeepers Hat Club (Harlem): Now in its second year of existence, this men’s hat store purveys an array of styles from straw hats to newsboy caps to French berets and more.

JJ Hat Center (Murray Hill): Established in 1911, JJ Hat Center sells a generous selection of styles (formal, cloth, fur, ivy caps, knit caps, baseball caps, berets and western hats, among others) and brands. From Biltmore to Stetson, JJ Hat Center also has its own workshop and creates handcrafted hats for its own line.

The Hat Shop (SoHo): For over 20 years, this custom millinery creates fashionable hats for men and women on top of selling finery from around 20 local milliners. From conversation starters to more understated looks, there are dozens upon dozens of styles available at The Hat Shop.

Makins Hats (Garment District): Though Makins Hats does not have a store yet, its Manhattan Factory continues to make hats by hand using traditional millinery methods, as well as is a chic spot to host an event. Stylish men’s hats can be purchased online and you can also contact Makins Hats to design your own luxury headwear.

Space Cowboy Boots NYC (NoLIta): Western fashion is can be found in NYC at this high-end boutique. Though custom boots are the main draw, Space Cowboy Boots has a line of hats perfect for any Urban Cowboy (or Cowgirl).

On this sixth day of October, let us honor Lewis Carroll’s Hatter, for it was he who said, “There is a place, like no place on earth. A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger. Some say, to survive it, you need to be as mad as a hatter. Which, luckily, I am.”

Though the Hatter may not have specifically been referring to NYC, it certainly applies to this great city. Embrace the madness of this wonderful Wonderland and find your perfect hat!
