Want to see a new band, listen to a reading by your favorite author or mingle with book-lovers at a party all while donating to charity? Head to Housing Works Bookstore and Cafe, where you can do all of the above.
The store looks like your average used bookstore and coffee shop, but Housing Works is also a charitable organization that employs mostly volunteers in their many thrift shops and one bookstore. The proceeds they make go directly to their healthcare services to help people with HIV/AIDS. On any given night, you could see a classic movie screening, participate in the frequently sold-out story-writing competition The Moth, get married (yes, people have weddings in the bookstore) or just grab a cup of coffee and a book.
After attending a few events at the store, I started volunteering as a barista in the cafe. It has been a great way to make new friends, attempt to create latte art and donate my time to a good cause. Check out housingworks.org to attend an event, become a volunteer or just learn more about the organization.
