A New Outdoor Speakeasy in Astoria, Queens

A New Outdoor Speakeasy in Astoria, Queens

Katch Gastropub Eatery in Astoria is the neighborhood bar that's open late with entertainment throughout the week— this local gem has something for everyone with trivia, outdoor game night, drink specials, and live music. When you walk into the expansive 2,000 square feet of space, the first thing you’ll notice is the 40-foot long bar with 50 beer taps! I always appreciate a bar that serves local beers from small breweries, and Katch showcases several, such as Grimm (Brooklyn), Finback (Queens), Gun Hill (Bronx), Big Alice (Queens), Transmitter (Queens), and Other Half (Brooklyn) just to name a few. I was invited to the opening night of their new outdoor speakeasy, so the hostess directed me to the patio where I was greeted by the new owner, Bill McSorley. Bill was dressed in a dapper tuxedo for the occasion and in between serving guests hor d'oeuvres, Bill gave me the rundown of his history in the restaurants business spanning over 20 years, his love for Queens and his desire to make Katch a diverse late night entertainment option.

Katch adopted a prohibition theme highlighting the era of the 1930's— hence, it considers itself a speakeasy— Frank Sinatra was crooning in the background, two large TV’s were playing the movie "The Untouchables", and a large wooden pergola that covers half the outdoor space was draped with string lights. Each picnic table was dressed in a black tablecloth, wine bottles used as candlesticks, and the tables also had framed black and white pictures of partygoers from the era. Our hostess, Catherine McSorley who was decked in a formal gown and pearls, pointed me towards the bar so we could grab a glass of ‘giggle water.’

The outdoor speakeasy provides plenty of space for everyone to move comfortably and mingle and by plenty, I mean an additional 2,500 square feet of comfortable outdoor space. The bar (where I spent most of the night so I wouldn't miss ANY cocktails) was adorned with wood accents and glass jars full of liquor-soaked fruits. The bartender handed me a brown paper bag with a mason jar cocktail inside called the aforementioned ‘giggle water’ (watermelon-infused vodka). It was pretty refreshing and dangerous— I only had one...ok two.

Katch is currently transforming this outdoor space nightly to accommodate its different themes throughout the week. Mondays are trivia night with wing specials, Tuesdays are for Tacos (of course), Wednesday nights are $5 burger specials, Thursdays will be the designated speakeasy night with prohibition-style cocktails, and Fridays are game night with Bar-B-Q, Cornhole, Beer Pong, Darts, and Basketball. No wonder Katch won Best Sports Bar and Best Singles Bar in Queens for "Best of the Boro 2017" presented by Bethspage Federal Credit Union.

Whether you're looking for a place to have a drink after sightseeing, watch the game and experience some great local brews, or just want to hear some live music, Katch is a one-stop shop and just a quick ride from Manhattan, just around the corner from the 7 subway. Operating hours are M to Th, 5 pm-1 am, F, 3 pm- 3 am, Sa, 11:30 am- 3 am, Su, 11:30 am- 1 am.
