RIU Hotels & Resorts Opens Newest Hotel in NYC

RIU Hotels & Resorts, the international chain founded in Mallorca by the Riu family in 1953, has recently opened a brand new hotel right here in NYC—the Riu Plaza New York Times Square Hotel—and it is awesome.

Located just steps away from the heart of Times Square at West 46th Street and Eighth Avenue, this 29-floor hotel houses 647 rooms, all with floor-to-ceiling windows giving guests spectacular views of the bustling city or the Hudson River and New Jersey. There are rooms for folks traveling alone, as well as those big enough for families or groups of friends looking to spend a night (or several) in the city.

Besides the fantastic scenery, each room is equipped with central air/heating, WiFi (available throughout the entire hotel), flat screen satellite televisions, a mini-fridge, an in-room safe and more. There’s also a 24-hour fitness center, four conference and meeting rooms that can be booked for meetings or events, concierge service and two dining options on the ground floor.

Riu Plaza New York Times Square Hotel has a Grab & Go place, Capital, where from 7:00 am-9:00 pm, folks can get snacks and drinks to take with them as they explore the city or to bring back up to their room. There is also Fashion, the restaurant/bar that offers a breakfast buffet, à la carte lunch and dinner, as well as snacks.

Capital and Fashion aren’t just for hotel guests! If you’re in Times Square and looking for a great deal for lunch, Fashion offers a salad/entrée/dessert meal for $12.50. I was lucky enough to sample some food prepared by the cooking staff at Fashion and, holy smokes, was it yummy. There’s also a full bar, which is perfect if you’re in the area and are in need of a cocktail before your show.

Before moving to NYC, I would travel here multiple times a year with my sister specifically to see Broadway shows. I wish the Riu Plaza New York Times Square Hotel was around back then because it is within walking distance of every Broadway theater in the Theater District and is physically on the same street as the Richard Rodgers Theatre. I could spot the “Hamilton” marquee (among several others) and my favorite pizza joint on Eighth Avenue from the window of the Junior suite I visited while on a tour of the hotel.

It’s not just about being close to theater, though, which the Riu Plaza New York Times Square Hotel is… but this hotel gives you easy access to pretty much everywhere in the city because of its proximity to transportation, as well as it’s location in general. Port Authority is only a couple short blocks away while Penn Station and Madison Square Garden are about one subway stop away apiece. It’s also easy to get to Columbus Circle, Central Park and the Upper West Side from this hotel, as well as the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn via the nearby subway lines. Countless dining and shopping destinations are all around and Riu Plaza New York Times Square Hotel makes an excellent home base to store your souvenirs or allows you a clean, comfortable spot to freshen up before you head back out to see the sites or attend your conference or whatever it is that brings you to NYC.

RIU Hotels & Resorts has over 100 hotels in 18 countries and welcomes over four million guests a year, with 40% of those guests being return customers. The Riu Plaza New York Times Square Hotel is the chain’s largest investment to date and only its second location in the U.S.
