A Variety of Artwork at Fountain Gallery’s TEXTING

Ann Fischman’s “The Graduation” and “The Sick Rose”

Now through February 26th, Fountain Gallery will display TEXTING, a group show of works that incorporate text. The Hell’s Kitchen gallery represents artists with mental illness. TEXTING, curated by Suzanne Murphy, contains over 30 diverse pieces in a variety of formats, from oil paint to pastels to collage.

I visited the gallery last week to check out the show. My favorite pieces were the collaged works, especially Davida Adedjouma’s three-dimensional pieces. Her “Barbie at the Apollo,” “The Barbie Myth” and “Barbie Choka” incorporate a unique combination of Barbie dolls, records, magazine cutouts and written text to tell a story. I also enjoyed Ann Fischman’s “The Graduation” and “The Sick Rose.” Both works were collaged onto 6-by-6 inch wood blocks and reminded me of vintage wood block photo transfers.
