This past week, I traveled to Chelsea to see Model/Arbus—Hasted Kraeutler’s fourth annual Great Photographs of the 20th Century exhibition. The large space has a rustic ceiling that resembles a barn roof with a large skylight, which proved to be the perfect natural lighting to view several works by the famed 20th Century photographers Lisette Model and Diane Arbus. I was already familiar with Arbus’ work—she famously documented people considered to be on the fringe of society (circus performers, giants, transgender people). I was not, however, familiar with the work of her teacher and mentor, Model, so it was great to see Model’s dynamic street photography hanging side by side with her protégé’s poignant images. Model/Arbus is on view at Hasted Kraeutler thru August 16.
