As I might have mentioned before, I was “this close” to going to art school. I decided on a career in journalism; however, if I ever decide to add a few letters after my name, I’d probably opt for a Master’s Degree in something art related. Because I went to a high school for the visual and performing arts, several classmates did go on to colleges focused on art, and many of them opted for Pratt Institute—an art college with its main campus in Brooklyn and satellite campuses in Manhattan and Utica. This venerable institution of higher learning is celebrating its 125th anniversary and, to commemorate the event, Pratt Manhattan Gallery is currently showing the exhibition 125 Icons: A Celebration of Works by Pratt Alumni and Faculty 1887-2012. The exhibit features 125 iconic works created by Pratt alumni and faculty (think the Chrysler Building, Esquire magazine covers, the Dunkin Donuts Logo, Scrabble and even Big Bird). The exhibition is free and open to the public and will run thru Jan. 19, 2013. Gallery hours are Mon. thru Sat., 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Thurs., 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The gallery will be closed Dec. 22 thru Jan. 1. For more information, click here.
