Wicked is Still Going Strong After 10 Years

Wicked is Still Going Strong After 10 Years

Celebrating 10 years on Broadway, Wicked is still going strong with full audiences and standing ovations. I’ve seen the show twice now—once a few years ago and once earlier this month week. Leading up to both performances, fans of the musical have gushed to me about the heartwarming story of two very opposite girls becoming best friends, the show-stopping songs and the gorgeous scenery and costume design. Despite these glowing reviews, I’ve still left surprised at how much I loved Wicked. Now I can see why many fans return for multiple shows.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel of same name, the show revolves around characters from The Wizard of Oz. Two strong women—the pretty, popular and ditsy Glinda (Alli Mauzey) and the opinionated, smart and literally green Elphaba (understudy Carla Stickler)—lead the cast of Ozians. Throughout the play, Glinda and Elphaba grow into their respective roles of the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West. The two witches also overcome their differences and their shared crush on classmate Fieryo (Derek Klena) to perform two stunning musical duets: “Defying Gravity” and “For Good.”
