John Lithgow is probably best known for his role as Dr. Dick Solomon in the 90s TV series 3rd Rock From the Sun and more recently as Winston Churchill in the Netflix series, The Crown. I'm a bit of a musical theater nerd so I remember him from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and in one of my favorite musicals, The Sweet Smell of Success. The legendary actor has had an over 30-year-long career and has won both a Tony and Emmy award for his incredible virtuosity. He is one of my favorite actors and I was thrilled to finally see him perform on Broadway at the American Airlines theater. I wasn't sure what to expect of his one-man show, but one thing I did know...this was about to be a master class.
In two acts that lasts about two hours, Lithgow takes the audience back to his childhood and introduces us to the members of his dynamic and colorful family as well as cherished characters from his father's favorite short stories, one by one all through eloquent storytelling and hilarious impressions. Lithgow portrays 11 different characters effortlessly throughout the show, creating different environments with "only one prop" a book of classic short stories by Ring Lardner and PG Wodehouse along with just an armchair as a scene partner. Statuesque and in a well-fitted suit, Lithgow completely transforms into his grandmother Ida, a parrot, his father and more without ever using a costume. I was completely enthralled by Lithgow's seamless transitions and left the theater wanting more.
In this unique event, Lithgow elevates the magic of storytelling to new heights—this heartwarming and hilarious play is not be missed with tickets starting at $39 until Mar. 4th, 2018.
