The Doctor Is In
The Doctor Is In

Last night, I went to the newly opened Times Square location of the Jekyll & Hyde Club—a themed restaurant based on the 19th-century Robert Louis Stevenson novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I am familiar with the spooky story and was always curious about the restaurant—having walked past the old location several times, where actors stand outside wearing Victorian garb and engaging passersby. When entering the new spot, patrons have two options: the front door or an old phone booth. I opted for the latter, and with a password I was escorted through the back of the booth into a small room reminiscent of a haunted house set—complete with eerie special effects. The rest of the large Times Square location is reminiscent of an old, mysterious mansion—with maze-like corridors, hidden doors for restrooms, ornately detailed rugs and decorations, comfy club chairs and ghoulish props (think a row of skeletons displayed in a large glass case and two-headed mannequins lounging on plush chairs). A lively cast of characters meanders throughout the restaurant entertaining patrons at their tables while they enjoy an extensive menu of hearty American fare. Diners may even purchase a macabre memento from the gift shop before they leave.
A Chilling Revival
Jekyll & Hyde Club is only a hop, skip and a jump from the Theater District, so it’s somewhat serendipitous that a revival of the popular Jekyll & Hyde The Musical, which enjoyed a long run on Broadway from 1997 to 2001, is currently playing a 13-week engagement at the Marquis Theatre. The latest version stars American Idol’s Constantine Maroulis, R&B singer-songwriter Deborah Cox and stage actress Teal Wicks. Audiences applaud these artists spellbinding performances, as well as the staging and set design, which pull them in and transport them to each location, including a laboratory, sitting room and eerie streets—all through the use of panels and spot-on lighting effects.
