One of the best things about summer in New York is the wide range of free outdoor activities. Prospect Park Bandshell is host to Celebrate Brooklyn!, a concert series that includes plenty of free shows by well-known musical acts. This year a variety of musicians from different genres—like bluegrass band Trampled by Turtles, ballet company Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal and hip-hop artist Shaggy —are all scheduled to perform. There are also a few paid benefit concerts throughout the summer and a $3 donation is suggested for all of the free shows. This past summer, I saw Ted Leo, Mission of Burma and Wild Flag at the Bandshell. The show was seated and my friends and I arrived early to find seats near the stage. Other performances don’t offer seating, but concertgoers are welcome to bring a blanket to sit on the concrete surrounding the stage or the grass behind the main audience area.
