Pool, Ping Pong, Dancing and Drinks at Slate

I recently went with friends to Slate Restaurant Bar & Billiards and, as the name suggests, the spot is a mix of a few different things: namely a trendy cocktail lounge, sleek restaurant, upscale gaming venue and intimate nightclub all rolled into one nicely packaged Flatiron District hot spot. The upper level of this large bi-level space features a sleek, illuminated bar and roomy lounge—complete with plush couches and modern club chairs, where a number of patrons sat, chatted with friends and enjoyed a wide array of bar bites (think jumbo chicken wings, herb & cheese breadsticks, sandwiches, burgers, wild mushroom & mozzarella quesadillas, and more). My friends and I arrived pretty early for a Friday evening—around 8 p.m.—but within a few hours, the upper-level space slowly transformed from a cool cocktail lounge to an even cooler nightclub, with a DJ spinning popular beats ranging from the soulful crooning of Justin Timberlake to Macklemore’s energetic rap stylings. Although there’s no denying Slate can give other clubs and lounges in the area a run for their money, the main draw to this spot has to be what’s hiding below. On the bottom level—accessed by a glowing, frosted glass staircase near the entrance—rests a large gaming area (think rows upon rows of pool tables, as well as stations for foosball and ping pong). Slate’s overall ultra-cool vibe extends to the lower level, with a number of couches, tables and chairs peppering the entire space—making the place seem more like a trendy living room as opposed to, essentially, a pool hall. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a few cocktails in a cool atmosphere, dance the night away, or play a few rounds of pool, Slate is a one-stop shop for Friday night fun.
