Some of the most iconic songs in musical theater history were written by librettist, Oscar Hammerstein II. He is most famous for his collaborations with Richard Rogers creating the Rogers and Hammerstein team that brought us "The Sound of Music," "Oklahoma!," "The King and I" and "South Pacific." In his 40-year-long career, Hammerstein II co-wrote 850 songs, winning him six Tony-awards and two Academy Awards for Best Original Song: was also a producer and a (usually uncredited) director. His timeless lyrics and melodies continue to move audiences and are staples in most jazz musician's repertoires. You won't find an audition book in NYC that doesn't have a song or two from Oscar Hammerstein II.
