Eight Years of Pins and Tunes at Brooklyn Bowl

Eight Years of Pins and Tunes at Brooklyn Bowl

Brooklyn Bowl—Brooklyn's premier music venue/bowling alley/Blue Ribbon fried chicken joint—celebrated its 8th anniversary on Friday, July 7, ringing in the birthday the only way the club's owners know how: with live music. Performances by Gigamesh, Delicate Steve and Brooklyn Bowl regular Talib Kweli kicked off a celebratory eight-night run on Thursday, June 29, during which the venue hosted fourteen live acts.

True to form to the venue, the acts varied widely in genre, ranging from Australian activist and musician Xavier Rudd to Grammy-award-winning bluegrass gurus Steep Canyon Rangers to individual DJ sets by Talib Kweli and Geologist and Daekin of Animal Collective. Live musical performances honoring recently passed Soungarden legend Chris Cornell, as well as tributes to the emo rock scene of the 2000s and the music of pop-icon Michael Jackson packed the dance floor as well.

Now the birthday bonanza is over, but Brooklyn Bowl still has shows lined up for every day this summer (except Mondays), with events for kids, adults, tourists and locals alike, and a number of events being held back-to-back. Every second, third and fourth Thursday of the month, hip-hop legends take the DJ reigns for Brooklyn Bowl's Bowl Train, a celebration of hip-hop, soul and funk music. Tonight, Questlove takes over the DJ booth; July 27 Mannie Fresh spins his magic, and on August 10, Talib Kweli returns after a five-week Brooklyn Bowl hiatus.

The bowling alley and music hall's Rock & Roll Playhouse series takes place every Sunday and offers a well-rounded learning experience for parents and kids to connect through music. The concerts take place from 12 pm-2 pm and include a workshop from 12:30 pm-1:30 pm, designed for children aged seven and under. Children are encouraged to "move, play and sing" to the music, creating a space within which they can discover new comfort zones with and around music. The Playhouse series will feature music from Phish this Sunday, July 23 and again on Sunday August 6; music from The Beatles July 30, Van Morrison August 13, Green Day August 20, and music from the disco era August 27.

Events for kids run the gamut at Brooklyn Bowl on the weekends, as the space hosts a no-cover Family Bowl from 12 pm-5 pm every Saturday.

The bowling alley is perched alongside a full bar serving local craft brews and housemade cocktails, with a kitchen that serves Blue Ribbon fried chicken, wings and ribs, as well as a variety of gluten-free and vegetarian options.

And if you want to be kid-free? With events like this Friday's Slow Jam: R&B Dance Party and a performance from renowned electronic rock four-piece band Zoogma on August 20, Brooklyn Bowl has everyone covered.
