Check Out The Step Afrika! Performance Tomorrow

If you’re still looking for weekend plans, I suggest a trip to Brooklyn to see a performance by Step Afrika! at Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College. This dance troupe is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the art of stepping. What’s “stepping” you ask? Well, this unique art form originating in African American fraternities and is based in African traditions whereby dancers use their bodies as instruments to create intricate, toe-tapping rhythms.

I became familiar with the art form while in college, so I can’t wait for a bit of nostalgia when I check out the performance tomorrow. If you are a dance enthusiast (in general), I’m sure you’ll appreciate the troupe’s use of tap, modern and hip-hop styles.

The high-energy performance will take place tomorrow (Sat., Jan. 23) at 2 p.m. at Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here. Regime Performing Arts, an award-winning step team from the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, will open for Step Afrika!
