Broadway-Quality Shows with Encores! at New York City Center

This year, New York City Center’s series Encores! celebrates 20 years of performances. Each production has the quality of a Broadway play, but employs a much faster pace: the cast and crew has about a week to rehearse before going into a few days of shows.

If you’re looking for a great performance for a more affordable price than Broadway, check out an upcoming show. Many of the shows feature stars of the Great White Way like Kristin Chenowith and Nathan Lane. Plus, some of these productions may go on to Broadway in the future—Tony-nominated musical After Midnight began with two Encores! runs in 2011 and 2012.

Last week, I got to see the dress rehearsal of the comedic musical Irma La Douce. Originally written in French, the story followed a Parisian prostitute and a man who fell in love with her. Jennifer Bowles starred as Irma, who stood out in a red-and-purple dress among the ensemble cast of men in gray suits. With upbeat songs and fun footwork, Bowles really stole the show.

Coming up is an Encores! Off-Center production starring Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda: tick, tick… BOOM! The Off-Center shows feature new takes on Off-Broadway musicals, like this one: an autobiographical show by Rent composer Jonathan Larson that first premiered off-Broadway in June 2001. The New York City Center production will run from June 25-28.
