Where to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in NYC

Celebrate this lively Mexican holiday, which commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, with creative cuisine, cool cocktails and more at one (or all) of the places below!

In Greenwich Village, the intimate Mexican eatery Horchata de Nueva York is celebrating today with its second annual “5 at 5” event. Pretty much the ultimate happy hour, festivities start at 5 p.m. tonight and include five menu items for $5, plus five drinks at five bucks each. Stop by the colorful restaurant—decked out with twinkling Edison bulbs and colorful décor, reminiscent of a Mexican hacienda—and nosh on tacos, mini chicken quesadillas, guac, corn and flan as you kick back Milagro Silver cocktails (think frozen strawberry margaritas, classic margaritas), sangria, the Mexican brew Tecate and Milagro Silver tequila shots. If you bring along a few drinking buddies, margarita pitchers and buckets of Corona will be available for a wallet-friendly $25.

Across town on the Lower East Side, La Contenta will hosts a celebration comparable to what one would experience in Mexico, complete with live accordion music on the front patio and tables of food, displayed in a similar fashion to a Mexican market, with savory and sweet selections that range from corn on the cob to churros. The specialty cocktail on offer will be The Mayan, the perfect pick if you’re craving something sweet, with Milagro-infused coconut, corn purée, agave nectar, lime juice and habanero-infused mescal for an extra kick. Bartenders can also whip up other lively libations like the Mezcal Avocado Margarita (yep, you read the right), a mix of Milagro silver tequila with montelobos, joven mescal, cucumber juice, jalapeño-infused agave syrup, lime juice, avocado purée and a pinch of cilantro.

Moving on up the island, in Midtown West the Hudson New York hotel is going to throw a rager tonight at its onsite restaurants Hudson Common and Private Park. The “Olé in May” fiesta, which takes places from 6 to 9 p.m., will include tequila tastings, margarita open bar, piñatas and taco, ceviche and guacamole specials. Tickets to the shindig are $49 per person. For the deets, email hudson.eatanddrink@mhgc.com
